Due South was a unique television series, primarily a crime drama but with definitely quirky aspects, produced in Canada. Premiering with a 93 minute movie pilot in April, 1994, the series aired in 68 episodes from April 1994 to December 1998 on CTV in Canada and on CBS in the United States.
The basic premise is that Royal Canadian Mounted Police Constable Benton Fraser travels to Chicago with his deaf pet wolf/dog, Diefenbaker, in search of his father’s killer. In Chicago, while attached to the Canadian consulate, Fraser is assigned to work with Chicago Police Department Detective Raymond Vecchio. They find the killer, and at the same time expose an environmental scam in Canada involving other members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. After this turn of events Fraser is definitely unwelcome back in Canada and so is indefinitely assigned to work in Chicago.
Constable Fraser is a highly intelligent, uncannily able detective, and unfailingly polite, and is contrasted with the more brash and assertive Detective Vecchio, but the two manage to work well as a team.
In the 1997 season Constable Fraser returns to Chicago to find that there is another detective impersonating Vecchio, who is supposedly working undercover. Fraser and his new partner, Detective Stanley Kowalski, also find a working rhythm and are soon successfully solving crimes together.
The quirkiness of the series involves the appearances of Fraser’s dead father as a ghost ; the fact that Fraser’s wolf/dog is deaf but can read lips; and the fact that Fraser often solves crimes by finding clues by scent, such as when he sniffs a rat’s breath and determines what type of barbeque it had been eating, which leads to solving a crime.
