The Colbys was an American prime time soap opera spin-off based on Dynasty.  In fact the original title was to be "Dynasty II: The Colbys".  Dynasty was the highest rated show in the 1984-85 season so it seemed only natural that the network would try to recapture their success.

The network spared no expense on the show , granting a huge budget that attracted stars like Charlton Heston, Ricardo Montalban, Barbara Stanwyck, and Katharine Ross.  However, in spite of the budget and star power, The Colbys did not garner the ratings the network was expecting and the show was cancelled after two seasons.

The Colbys revolves around the Colby family, distant relatives of the Carringtons who appeared in Dynasty.  In a bizarre love triangle that sets up the bulk of the plot, heiress Fallon Carrington Colby suffers an accident and is presumed dead.  However, she reappears suffering amnesia.  She is drawn to the name Colby and sets off to rediscover herself, and instead finds playboy Miles Colby, who unknown to her is the cousin of her husband Jeff Colby.  The two get married, and eventually are discovered when Jeff comes to relocate in Los Angeles.  Imagine his surprise to find his presumed dead wife is not only not dead, but is now married to his cousin!
