Barney Miller blended the detective show with comedy to create a situation comedy centered in a New York City police station.  Barney Miller aired on ABC for 172 episodes from January 23, 1975 to September 9, 1982.

Barney Miller referred to the captain of the station, played by Hal Linden.  Barney had to deal with the antics of the officers under his command as well as the criminals that they apprehended.  A given episode would see the detectives bring in three or four criminals who would provide various plot points and crimes that needed to be solved.
