To bridge the six-year gap between Make Room for Daddy and Make Room for Granddaddy two specials were aired:
Make More Room for Daddy on NBC in 1967. Completing his college education, Rusty enlists in the army, where he meets, falls in love with, and marries Susan MacAdams, a colonel’s daughter.
Make Room for Granddaddy on CBS on 9/14/69. Discharged from the service, Rusty enrolls in medical school. Expecting their first child, he and Susan set up housekeeping away from the family nest.
Danny and Kathy are in Europe on a show-business engagement; Linda is residing at a boarding school in Connecticut to prevent any interference to her education; Rusty and Susan are struggling newlyweds; and Terry, the mother of a six-year-old son, Michael, is preparing to join her husband, Bill Johnson, a serviceman who is stationed in Japan. Michael is to stay with Bill’s parents until he and Terry settle and find a house.
For reasons which are not explained, Terry is now married to Bill Johnson, not Pat Hannegan, as in the original series.
The Series:
Returning home after their European engagement, and welcomed by the family, Danny and Kathy discover Terry’s plans. Wanting Michael to remain with them, Danny persuades Terry to let him stay with them for several days and let him decide where he’ll be the happiest. Danny and Kathy cater to his every whim, and Michael chooses to remain with them. Stories relate the trials and tribulations of the individual members of the Williams family.
