George Howell intends on signing Liza to his speakers bureau, but she wants no part of it because of severe stage fright . His persistence eventually wears her down, but her fear grows as the first lecture approaches. To calm her down, he tells her about the old speaker's trick: just imagine that everyone in the audience looks foolish; maybe they have flashing red noses or they're sitting around in their underwear.

The uppity attitude of Mrs. Kenyon, the snobbish secretary of the PTA, rubs Liza the wrong way. When she learns there's a prize for the mother selling the most items at the rummage sale, Liza gets competitive.

Liza is worried sick about Jenny who's in bed with a cold, but Jenny's having a big time drumming up sympathy on the phone and listening to Pat Boone records. Against her motherly instinct, Liza leaves Jenny with her grandmother to give a lecture in Washington, but can do nothing but worry about how the poor child must be suffering without her.
