Climax! was an anthology series airing from 1954 to 1958, with performances by many top and up-and-coming stars of the era.
Henry Louis Gehrig (June 19, 1903 – June 2, 1941) was a first baseman, playing for the New York Yankees for 17 seasons from 1923 to 1939. Known as ‘The Iron Horse ’, he was a dependable, very strong and very talented player who set many records in the sport.
This episode of Climax! is about his life and his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which became known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The episode includes archive footage of Lou Gehrig and other baseball greats Dizzy Dean, Bill Dickey, Joe McCarthy and Babe Ruth.
Lou Gehrig’s story was also portrayed in The Pride of the Yankees (1942), starring Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright, and again in 1978 in the made-for-television film A Love Affair : The Eleanor and Lou Gehrig Story starring Blythe Danner and Edward Herrmann.
