Hancock’s Half Hour was a BBC radio comedy which aired from 1954 to 1961. The program was also produced and aired on television from 1956 to 1960 in 30-minute episodes. The series is credited as being one of the first programs to establish the television sitcom genre on BBC, departing from the more common variety type of program, and focusing on character development.
The series was set at 23 Railway Cuttings in East Cheam, Surrey, England, and was about the life and times of Anthony Aloysius Hancock, a struggling actor/comedian trying to appear more affluent than he really is. Various characters interacted with Hancock as he tried to make his way through life, including Sidney Balmoral James, a sometimes roommate and con man, who usually managed to embroil Hancock in his schemes.
