In the first season, Sock is an ornithologist, living in a trailer with his Aunt Gus. He starts to date Mandy Peoples, who happens to be the mayor’s daughter, after he is elected to the City Council. The Mayor is not too fond of their relationship, but slowly starts to like Sock.

Sock starts to take classes in order to become an attorney. Although he does not take the classes through law school, he wants to pass the State bar exam to have enough money to marry Mandy. In the season finale, Sock surprises Mandy with a wedding proposal and wants to get married as soon as possible. He knows the mayor will want a big wedding, which will take many months to prepare. Sock wants to marry Mandy quickly, so they travel to Nevada for a quick wedding, so that he can get back in time to take his bar exam. Plans change when they are taken to jail for a traffic violation, which withholds Sock from taking the bar exam. He does not want the mayor knowing any of this, for he wants to be independent. They decide to keep their marriage confidential. 

The majority of the episodes in the second season are about Sock and Mandy trying to be together during the 1950’s while hiding their big wedding secret from the mayor. 

Occasional asides and comments are heard from Cleo, Sock's faithful Bassett hound.
