Andy’s Gang was a continuation of the Smilin’ Ed McConnell and His Buster Brown Gang radio (1944-1953) and television programs (1953-1954). When Ed McConnell died suddenly in 1954 the program was re-named Andy’s Gang and Andy Devine took over as host. Andy’s Gang was broadcast on NBC from 1955 to 1960. The programs were sponsored by Buster Brown’s Shoes.
Andy Devine, a big, gravelly voiced man with a gentle character, began each episode reading from a big book, Andy’s Stories. As Andy read the opening, films would be shown and the stories were often about the adventures of Gunga in far-off places. After the story is told Andy would interact in silly skits with other characters on the program like Midnight the cat, Little Squeeky the mouse, and Froggy, the mischievous, troublemaking puppet.
Andy would close each episode with, "Yes, sir, we're pals, and pals stick together. And now, gang, don't forget church or Sunday school."
