This cartoon was created in the late 1930's by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo.   The idea began as a children's book but was later sold to Paramount Pictures animation division.   In 1945 the cartoon was released and Casper's character originally lives in a haunted house along with a number of other ghosts.  Together, their goal is to scare the living, however, Casper decides he would prefer to be-friend the living, therefore he sets out on his own.
 
In 1950, a Casper the Friendly Ghost series was started by Paramount and the same scenario continued throughout every "Short".  Casper would try to make friends and many were initially scared of him. but in each episode he manages to convince at least one person that he is a "good" ghost .

Casper the Friendly Ghost has been made into movies and a number of comic books have been released.  The voice of the character has been portrayed by such actors as, Cecil H. Roy, Mae Questel, Norma MacMillan, Julie McWhirter, Jeremy Foley, Devon Werkhesier and Devon Sawa.
