Can You Top This was a television comedy panel show based on a very popular radio show of the same name. The television show was not nearly as successful as the radio show although it made two attempts. The original radio show enjoyed a run of 12 years from 1940 to 1952. In October of 1950, the show attempted to make the jump to television, but only lasted six months, ending in March of 1951. A second attempt in 1970, starring Wink Martindale as host, fared a little better. The show debuted in January of 1970 and lasted eight months.
The television show followed the same format as the radio show, showcasing jokes sent in by the viewers. Host Peter Donald (or Richard Dawson in the 1970's version) told the viewer’s joke and the applause and laughter from the audience was measured and recorded. The panel of comedians would tell their own jokes on the same subject and try to get a better score than the viewer's joke. The viewer would win a sum of money for each comedian that couldn't score higher than their joke.
