Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt (1940-1943)

Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt

(1940-1945)

History / News

Informal chats with First Lady Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt broadcast every Tuesday and Thursday sponsored by Sweetheart Soap .

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt addressed the American people as a commercial broadcaster during her years as First Lady.  This was a first on several levels.  Firstly, the American people had not had this level of access to the First Lady before.  This elevated her celebrity status.  Although this also brought concerns regarding a potential conflict of interest by getting paid for this activity while performing her functions as First Lady, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt's philanthropy defused most of those claims.

Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt viewed her role as First Lady as an educator to the people and public relations officer to her husband's administration.  As a result of this, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt changed American's idea of what the role of a First Lady is.
