Jack Armstrong, All American Boy, was an adventure series that originated on WBBM in Chicago in 1933. Over the course of the show ’s lifespan it would go on to be broadcast via most of the major networks, CBS, NBC and ABC. The show was sponsored primarily by Wheaties cereal.
The show followed the worldwide adventures of Jim Armstrong, a teenager and popular athlete at Hudson High School. Many of the stories focused around Jim's, friends Billy and Betty Fairfield, and their industrialist uncle, James Fairfield, who was more frequently called 'Uncle Jim'. The standard plot format for the show was that Uncle Jim had to travel to some area of the world for business, and would take Jim, Billy and Betty along with him. The trio would get into adventures that related to the locale for the week's show. The show would also work in details and facts about countries around the world, serving as a travelogue of sorts.
Jack Armstrong, All American Boy spawned numerous side projects, including books, comics, and a movie. Hanna Barbera was in talks for an animated series, however, the licensing of the characters fell apart, resulting in Hanna Barbera creating a new series of characters for their show, giving birth to the popular Johnny Quest series.
