Lum and Abner was a comedic radio show created by Chester Lauck, who played Lum, and Norris Goff, who played Abner. Lum and Abner were a pair of hillbillies who ran a store called the Jot 'em Down Store in Pine Ridge, Arkansas. The duo was always on the lookout for get-rich-quick schemes that would frequently land them in hot water.
Lauck and Goff were childhood friends who were discovered shortly after graduating from the University of Arkansas together. Their act was picked up by KTHS radio in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Shortly thereafter, Lum and Abner was broadcast nationally by NBC and sponsored by Quaker Oats. Eventually Lum and Abner would make the transition to the big screen, creating a total of seven films produced about the duo's adventures.
