The film is set in 1939 where a slave ship known as Amistad is headed to the U.S. from Cuba. The ship is full of chained Africans who have been sold as slaves in Cuba. During the voyage, a tribal leader by the name of Cinque leads a revolution and kills their captors. They reach the United States, hoping someone might help them, but instead they are sent to prison for running away. There is a language barrier for the slaves since they do not speak English and believe they are going to die for their actions. Their luck changes when an advocate lawyer decides to help them, stating they were free people from another country. The case gets sent to the Supreme Court, where John Quincy Adams makes and stirring and inspiring request to set the prisoners free.
