The film is set in the 1950's where an old Jewish widow from Atlanta is no longer in the state to drive. Her son convinces her that he will enlist a driver to help her out. He hires her without her consent, since she is not accustomed to change. Hoke is her driver and at first she does not allow him to drive her anywhere, but he soon gets to be on her good side. They begin a relationship that is shown within twenty years and how they overcome their differences.
