The film is set in Oklahoma during the depression. Two concurrent visitors crash into the Wagoneer home during a disastrous dust storm as well as a convertible. Red, a country singer gets a big opportunity when he is invited to try out for the Grand Ole Opry, yet this happened back when he was in Nashville. He has no money and has tuberculosis. Whit, a fourteen year old boy dreads the idea of becoming a cotton picker for the rest of his days and persuades his mother to let him drive with his Uncle Red to learn some things. Their adventure is full of jokes and fun.
