Smooth Mexican cattleman Alvarez Kelly’s (William Holden) only interest in the Civil War is to make some money from it. He is kidnapped by Confederate Colonel Tom Rossiter (Richard Widmark) during an exhausting drive to distribute cattle to the Unionists. The Colonel tries to persuade Kelly to rob the herd and send it to his town of Richmond that is full of hungry troops.
