This film takes place in Shenandoah, Virginia, where the widower and farmer Charlie Anderson’s (James Stewart) life is nothing but peaceful with his six sons - Jacob, James, Nathan, John, Henry and Boy, his daughter Jennie (Rosemary Forsythe), and his daughter-in-law and James' wife Ann Anderson in his farm. Charlie’s sons are not allowed to fight in the army, for he doesn’t believe it’s their war to fight. Jennie ends up marrying the man of her dreams Lieutenant Sam (Doug McClure) , yet do not go on their honeymoon being that Sam has to fight. Problems arise when Boy is taken as a prisoner by the soldiers, believing he is someone else. Charlie immediately rides out with his sons.
