Frank Pagano, gangster and CEO of Pagano Enterprises, needs to lose $500,000 within thirty days to keep from paying a huge amount in taxes. He decides to invest in a film version of Romeo and Juliet and he appoints Philippe Fontaine, a failed star who has not been able to work as he used to. Pagano then hires Angela, a harlot who dreams of becoming an actress, to be Philippe’s on-screen girl. She also happens to have a close relationship with Frank.
Problems arise when Philippe cannot follow the orders of the incompetent director, Pandowski, even though he has tried his best to follow his direction. When Philippe discovers the real truth of the making of the film, he takes a copy of it to the Venice Film Festival as a comedy film, twisting Frank’s plan. The film is considered an intelligent satire and wins a Golden Lion.
