In 1896 it is declared that the Olympic Games will return back in Athens. A young peasant boy, Spiridon Loues, determines that he will compete in the 26-mile marathon. When he arrives in Athens, he encounters Christina Gratsos, a young woman who is from the same town as him. She now works as a personal maid for Eleni Costa, Greece's most fascinating actress.

Although he arrived after the modification date, Spiridon's exceptional athletic ability catches the attention of Coach Graham of the American team. He is so fascinated with Spiridon, that he is approved to enter the race.  Eleni lets the press know that she will marry the winner of the race, convinced that it will be her boyfriend, Lieutenant Vinardos.
