Nick Adams leaves home to travel on a cross country journey.   The film revolves around people he meets along the way such as a drunk and a telegrapher.  When he tries to find work in New York City as a reporter and is unsuccessful, he decides to join the Italian army and works as a ambulance driver during World War I.   His experiences both professional and personal during this time finally make him into the man he longed to be.
