The H.M.S. Avenger is about to fight the French vessel during the Napoleonic Wars. Captain Vere depends too much on the devious John Claggert to make sure all is in order aboard the ship. Billy Budd is new to the crew and is a friendly and loyal guy whom the crew falls in love with, except for Claggert who cannot stand his purity, especially when he is promoted to fore-top-captain. Claggert has his own plans to bring down Billy Budd.
