Sergeant Braxton Rutledge (Woody Strode) is a black cavalry soldier who is charged with rape and murder on a young white woman.  Lieutenant Tom Cantrell (Jeffrey Hunter) is sent to defend Sergeant Braxton Rutledge in a courtroom, where the story unfolds and is told through flashbacks.
