Elvis Presley plays Tulsa McLean, a U.S. Army tank crewman who dreams of someday running his own nightclub when he leaves the army, yet he discovers that such dreams don't come cheap. While serving with the 3rd Armored 'Spearhead' Division in West Germany, Tulsa and his buddies form a band and perform in various German 'Gasthauses', nightclubs, and on an Armed Forces stage. During one of his performances he even discovers the record Blue Suede Shoes sung by someone named Elvis on the jukebox.

In order to raise money, Tulsa places a bet on his friend Dynamite, that he can spend the night with a club dancer named Lili, rumored to be hard to get.  When Dynamite is transferred to Alaska, Tulsa is brought in to take his place. Although he is not looking forward to it, he must go through with it, in order to keep his money. Using his Southern charm  he calls Lili, 'Ma'am' and she begins to fall for McLean. In the end Tulsa wins more than he bargained for—he not only wins the bet for his outfit, but he wins Lili's heart.
