Navy test pilot, Lieutenant Dan Prescott is chosen to fly the Y-13 into outer space and his brother Commander Prescott is wary of the decision. Captain Ben Richards assures the Commander that Dan is the best choice they got, even though on his last assignment, he opposed his orders while landing his ship. Right after he landed the ship, he left to see his girlfriend Tia without writing out the report of his mission. Despite Dan’s lack of work, Captain Richards believes Dan is the correct pilot for this mission and has been examined by Doctor Paul von Essen.
Dan takes off with the Y-13 and gets up to 600,000 feet even though he is to begin going downward. He keeps getting up higher to 250 miles and quickly loses restraint of the aircraft, requiring him to launch the ship. The New Mexico State Police then calls in reporting that a Mexican farmer saw a parachute connected to an aircraft close by his farm near the city of Alvarado. Chief Wilson informs the military to be sure it might have something to do with their mission. Wilson and Commander Chuck unite to view the remains of the crash. Immediately they know that Dan is dead. When the aircraft is examined, it is revealed that the breaking chute was working perfectly well. Other things are revealed as well, but where is Dan?
