Book-wormish and unpopular Walter Paisley works at a beatnik cafe, and envies the popular and talented regulars who appear there.  He's inspired when he accidentally kills his neighbor's cat and covers its body in plaster to hide his mistake.  Unfortunately, all of a sudden he's hailed as an artist and people want to see more of his work.  Things really begin to go wrong then when he can only think to try to duplicate his methods ... and people begin to disappear.
