Dave Hirsch arrives to his hometown in Parkman, Indiana after the war from Chicago. He has a problem with the bottle and is angry with the world. His passion is writing, having already written some novels. He encounters his older brother Frank, who is owner to a jewelry store. He is also an outstanding resident of Parkman and they go out to dinner with his family. There Dave encounters his sister-in-law Agnes, who despises him for one of the characters in his novel who seemed to be influenced on her and his niece Dawn. He also meets the school teacher Gwen French who he is immediately attracted to. She also happens to be the daughter of his old teacher Robert Haven French and admires him as a writer. His feelings for Gwen make him go back to the bottle though.
