During the 1840's, Dr. Thomas Bolton, a British surgeon feels strongly for having anesthetics in surgery, for the patient will not feel any pain. He creates an opium-based anesthetic to and plans to perform a surgery with his new creation.  Dr. Bolton performs the experiment on a patient in front of all his colleagues, but the experiment goes terribly wrong when his patient wakes up in the middle of the surgery. The result of the experiment leaves him without a job and tarnishes his reputation.

Dr. Bolton then becomes addicted to the anesthetic he created and starts to administer the chemicals to a group of criminals, for he also wants to support himself and his new addiction. The untrustworthy relationship he has with the group of criminals makes matters worse when he is unintentionally involved in a murder that leaves him in a blackmail plot.
