Alice Chicoy is married to driver Johnny. He is the owner of tiny owns a small and weary bus that only makes big stops. Alice owns a small eatery and has a problem with the bottle. She is not happy with the way her life has unfolded, so to make matters better she plans a way to surprise her husband in the middle of his bus route.
One of the travelers in the bus is humiliated burlesque dancer, Camille Oakes who is traveling to San Juan for a job that will pay her well. Camille begins a frisky conversation with salesman Ernest Horton. The two are very attracted to one another. Many stories are revealed on the bus ride, which reaches a misleading mountain territory in California. The travelers on the bus go through a conglomeration of life changing encounters. The bus ride has a deep impact on the radial salesman and the destitute dancer.
