The United Planets Cruiser C57-D is instructed to go to the planet of Altair IV, which is sixteen light-years from Earth. Its assignment is to uncover what happened on an exploration that occurred twenty years ago, in which it was supposed to institute a settlement on the planet. Dr Edward Morbius contacts the group and advices them to not go through with the assignment. Commander John J. Adams discounts his advice and continues with the instructions he was asked to follow.

Robby the Robot welcomes the crew, where he brings Adams, Farman and Ostrow to Dr. Morbius. Morbius tells them that a mysterious power put an end to almost all of the associates in his exploration, dissipating their star ship. The only survivors were his wife and daughter Altaira, who decided to stay. His wife is now dead from, leaving only his nineteen year old daughter. Morbius is afraid the new group will go through the same thing he did. Altaira only knows about her father and has very little memory of her mother. She becomes interested in forming new relationships once she meets the new crew.
