Sam Gifford's life before he served in the war was one of riches and privileges, but after being downgraded, he learns more about himself and the man he should become.
The main character, Sam Gifford looks back on the days before the war when he owned a cotton plantation. When the war began, Gifford became a sergeant with the National Guard unit and when he had a disagreement with his lieutenant about firing at his own men, Gifford to a swing at him and therefore received punishment by being sent off to disciplinary battalion. Now in his new role, he begins to socialize with people he once despised and through this experience, he learns how to become a better person.
