The main character, Bernie Goldsmith is a civilian employee for the United States Navy. He has been with this job many years until he is suspended after being suspected that he has communist affiliations from his youth. They find he is a security risk and therefore, Goldsmith loses his job. To fight back, he hires an attorney, Joe DiMarco, and tries to defend his reputation. It is finally proven in court that he is not and has never been a communist. Although, proven innocent it still takes a long drawn out fight to prove that he truly is innocent and finally earns his job back.
