John Parrish, played by Glenn Ford, is a Civil War veteran recovering from his injuries in the war. He is finally allowed to return East with his fiancée Caroline Vail. Plans change for him and he decides to stay after he sees hired gun Wade Matlock kill Sheriff Martin Kenner. Wade’s boss is Lew Wilkison, owner of Anchor Ranch and is paralized from the waist down and needs crutches to walk, who has been receiving profits from a number of small ranchers. John decides to sell his ranch to Lew and questions him on the murder of Kenner, in which Lew insists he has fired Matlock. Lew’s brother, Cole offers John a low price for his ranch as Lew tries to convince him there is no reason his neighbor Hank Purdue and him should not take the offer.

Cole has secretly been seeing a Mexican girl named Elena, in which Lew’s wife, Martha does not approve of. She tells him she is in love with Cole and not Lew and will do anything to protect him. John begins to stress over the information Lew has provided for him as a ranch hand tells him that he saw Lew’s men heading towards the Purdue ranch which infuriates John. On his way to the ranch, John finds his ranch hand, Bud Hinkleman dying from a gunshot by Matlock. John has revenge on his mind after he goes to the new Sheriff who feels helpless in stopping Lew and his men. This begins a war between John and Lew, for Lew lied to John on firing Matlock
