Professor Gerald Deemer has been working on special nourishment that will provide some easiness on an anticipated food deficit with the augmentation in human population. For the most part his experiments have been a success, but there also have been some unsuccessful ones. Two of his collaborators insert the nourishment, killing them a couple days later. One of them goes psychotic and injects Deemer with the deadly nourishment. While the madness is going on, a huge tarantula is injected as well and grows rapidly. It begins destroying cattle and then humans.
