The film covers a 24-hour period. Hal Carter is a former college football star, aimless and without a job, after not being successful in his acting career. On Labor Day he meets up with his fraternity buddy, Alan Benson, in a small Kansas town. Alan is the son of a rich grain elevator owner. Hal starts doing backyard work for the kind-hearted Mrs. Potts in return for breakfast. He confronts the paperboy, Bomber, when he is provoking Madge Owens, who is dating Alan. Madge’s mother has high hopes she will marry Alan, for she is a single parent and wants Madge to surround herself with higher, respectable society. Alan loves Madge and intends to marry her, but his father does not think she is suitable for him. Madge informs her mother that she is not in love with Alan and is worried about being liked only for her looks.
Hal is the type of guy who gets along with most people and Alan is thrilled to see Hal. He gets Hal a job at the family’s huge grain elevator. He guarantees Hal a consistent job as a wheat scooper and wants to bring him to the Labor Day picnic. Hal is a little hesitant about going, but Alan convinces him when he tells him that Madge’s book-smart younger sister, Millie, will be his date for the picnic. Millie is immediately attracted to Hal’s positivity and charm.
