The film begins in 1942, where a group of young men join the Marines and leave their families behind. They are ready to fight, but are not satisfied with their assignments that do not consist of combat. Andy Hookens is one of the Marines who becomes romantically involved with a New Zealand widow named Pat. They live in the moment knowing the war can separate them.
