Frank McCloud travels to Key Largo to attend the funeral of a friend who died while serving during World War II. He stays at an old hotel that is run by Nora Temple, his friend's widow, and James Temple, who is handicapped. Problems arise for the three when a gang led by Johnny Rocco arrives at the hotel until the hurricane is done. Mr. Temple is constantly reprimanding Rocco, but since he is bound to a wheelchair, that is all he can do. Frank stays away from Rocco, tired of the brutality of war. He soon changes his mind when he cannot stand Rocco mistreating his harlot, Gaye Dawn.
