The film is set during September of 1914 in Eastern Africa where a German colony is residing. They soon discover the country is at war, which changes Reverend Samuel Sayer to become a belligerent person. The German soldiers burn and destroy his mission. His snobby sister Rose and gives him an unreliable steamboat called the African Queen along with unfriendly companion Charlie Allnut. Although the two are completely different from one another, they must work together through their long voyage. Charlie has revenge on her mind regarding her brother. 

The African Queen has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry .
