U.S.Army scouts Gene Autry and 'Cougar' Claggett are ordered to Utah to capture Confederate mercenary bandit Wade McQuarrie who is intrusive with Federal supply lines during the Civil War. They pursue the bandits to Gateway, a settlement post lead by Colonel Middler who has a daughter, Dell and a son, Walt. Walt quietly encourages McQuarrie's doings. Gene and Dell flee after McQuarrie discovers them.
