Queen for a Day

(1951)

Film / Documentary / Television Adaptation

This film is based on the popular daytime Mutual Broadcasting Company radio program, “Queen for Today”, that originated on April 30th, 1945 from New York. Hosted by Jack Bailey, a former vaudeville music man and World's Fair barker, the five times a week, thirty minute show moved top Hollywood California, and became a very successful television program that lasted well into the 1970's. Bailey, in pre-show interviews with audience members, would select 3 or 4 contestants who would pour out their hearts explaining why they deserved to be Queen for a Day, and then the audience would select a winner. This movie version was comprised of three short story segments detailing the process of a contestant appearing on the television program.
