Near the end of the Civil War, Captain Cyrus Harding, along with other Union prisoners, use a balloon to escape a Southern prison camp and end up marooned on a mysterious volcanic island with very unusual inhabitants. Rulu, a visitor from Mercury, seeks a radioactive material that will enable her to manufacture an explosive that will destroy the world. Captain Nemo aids Harding and his men against the island's natives, pirates, and Rulu and her Mercurian henchmen.
