Dixon Steele is a screenwriter who is left to script a disgusting bestseller and has Mildred Atkinson, a hat-check girl, inform him about the story in her version. Problems arise when Mildred is found murdered and Steele is suspected of the crime. His reputation of rage does not help his case. Lucky for him, neighbor Laurel Gray gives him an alibi. Laurel and Steele become closer to one another and fall in love. Hopefully Steel's rage does not come between them.
