Poet Susan Grieve meets naval hero Slick Novak at a Manhattan restaurant. He ignores his blind date, as he is far more interested in Susan. He leaves with her to her apartment, where they spend the night in conversation. The following day, he returns, and for the next five days they decide to stay in Susan’s country house. They both share intimate details of their lives with each other. She tells him she has an estranged relationship with her mother, while he admits that it is his dream to become a priest. They have a couple quarrels, and Slick departs to the city. Susan goes back home alone . Later he tries to make their relationship work, but Susan has moved on. She has also forgiven her mother, and points this out to Slick. She encourages him to go and follow his dream, which he decides to do. Susan then calls up her hospitalized mother, hoping to reunite.
