Set in New England, after the Civil War, an exhausted war veteran, Ezra Mannon returns home to his sad wife (Christine) and caring daughter (Lavinia). But Lavinia's ex-boyfriend, Adam Brant, starts an affair with Christine, and together Adam and Christine plan to kill Ezra. When they accomplish their crime, Lavinia goes to her brother, Orin to help bring the couple to conduct. When they succeed with this matter, Orin goes crazy and his suicide note may be a problem for Lavinia and her new love, Peter Niles.
