Ivan IV rules as archduke of Moscow between in 1547. After becoming the archduke he makes himself Tsar of Russia and has plans to recover lost Russian land. His success is threatened by many events that have happened in his life beginning with making himself Tsar. The union between him and Anastasia and his plot against the Tartars backfire on him. He seems unbeatable when he comes down with a severe sickness and comes out of it alive when all thought he would die. The Boyars are his biggest enemies and want to take away his power. Primarily his aunt wants to take his power, who wants her foolish son to succeed with her. Another person trying to get in his way is Kurbsky, a warrior prince who wants to marry Anastasia along with taking his power away. Ivan skillfully uses his wit to get the people to strengthen his power.
