Harry Morgan and his alcoholic companion, Eddie, are serving during World War II and are staying on the island of Martinique. They try to make business with a boat, but with the war going on, they do not make much. They become desperate for money, so they find a job where they have to transport a man fleeing from persecution from the Nazis to Martinique.
