During a calm winter in Czechoslovakia, before a war was to start, Jaroslav Haschek gives his god daughter, Vera Hascheck her first pair of ice skates. He loves doing things like this for her, for he is a warm and cheerful person. She becomes a natural on the ice skates and her friendly village takes notice and says she has an amazing talent. She ends up winning the ice-skating championship in Czechoslovakia and is offered to compete at the grand Lake Placid Carnival in the United States. She receives many offers from many different people, but refuses to sign with anyone. During her stay in Lake Placid, where she is performing at her best, she is informed that the Nazi’s are entering Czechoslovakia. As soon as she hears the news, she wants to forget about her competition and return home to help. For some reason her trip cannot be planned. She feels alone and searches for her uncle Carl Cermack, who is a successful citizen of America.
