An American in England (1942)

An American in England

(1942)

Drama / News - 6 (30 minute) Programs

Cast: Norman Corwin, Joseph Julian and Edward R. Murrow

An American in England was a joint venture in 1942 between American broadcaster CBS and the British BBC to support the war effort.  A blend between written drama and real world events, An American in England portrayed an American reporter, played by Joseph Julian, interviewing real people about events going on in Britain during World War II.

An American in England was broadcast to American audiences to create solidarity of purpose between the two countries in the fight against the Axis powers.  By broadcasting the plight of British citizens directly into American households, Americans gained a better understanding of what their allies were going through.
