This is one of six films made by RKO starring the fine character actor, Jean Hersholt, based on the "Dr. Christian" radio series in 1937 on NBC radio that lasted for 16 years. Dr. Christian, a kindly, gentle, wise, small-town physician who ministers to ailments physical and emotional, has a practice in a small Minnesota town. Dr. Paul Christian is giving a party for Janie Webster, a motherless little girl of nine, with a fine singing voice. Her father, Bob Webster, is about to leave the bank where he works to go to the celebration, but a shortage is found in his books, and he is held responsible, jailed, and subsequently, in a court trial is found guilty. Janie is not told that her father is going to prison, but her schoolmates quickly make sure she is informed and brought up to date, and she becomes very ill. Dr. Christian gets his friends and household together, hoping to prove Bob's innocence.
